Good news: SEO does work—but only when done right. In this post, I’ll walk you through a proven SEO strategy, step by step, with recommended tools for each phase. This is the same framework I used to grow my own website to over 500,000+ organic visitors per month.

What Is an SEO Strategy?

An SEO strategy is a structured plan designed to increase a website’s visibility in search engine results through keyword optimization, technical improvements, and content promotion. The goal is to drive more organic traffic by aligning your site’s content with what your target audience is searching for.

Simply put: An SEO strategy is the roadmap you follow to grow your traffic organically.

Step 1: Create a List of Keywords

Every successful SEO campaign begins with keyword research.

One of the easiest ways to get started is by using Google Suggest. Just start typing a keyword into the Google search bar and it will display a list of related suggestions. These suggestions are based on real user searches, so you can be confident that people are actually looking for those terms.

sTip: Focus on long-tail keywords — these are longer, more specific phrases. They have lower competition and are easier to rank for, especially if your website is still growing. Start with a few seed keywords, and use tools like Ubersuggest, Semrush, or Google Keyword Planner to analyze search volume and competition.

Goal: Come up with a list of at least 10 high-potential keywords.

Step 2: Analyze Google’s First Page

Once you have your list of keywords, the next step is to analyze the first page of Google for each term. Search each keyword and study the top 10 results. Take note of:

  • Content format (list post, guide, review, etc.)
  • Headline style
  • Page type (blog post, product page, landing page)

Why is this important? Because it tells you what type of content Google favors for that keyword. If most results are listicles, you’ll probably need to create a list post too. If they’re guides, a step-by-step tutorial might be the way to go.

Goal: Understand the content pattern and user intent behind each keyword.

Step 3: Identify Your Competitors

Now that you understand the SERPs, it’s time to identify your organic competitors. You can use tools like SEMrush or Ahrefs to do this. Simply enter your domain name and look for a section called “Organic Competitors” or “Competing Domains.”

Step 5: Add a “Hook” to Get Backlinks

Backlinks are still a major ranking factor. To get them, your content needs to include a hook — something that encourages people to link to it.

Examples of effective content hooks include:

  • Original data or case studies
  • Ultimate guides
  • Expert quotes or interviews
  • Visual assets like charts and infographics

Real Example: Let’s say you’re writing about “voice search”. If you publish a post filled with unique statistics or research findings, people writing on similar topics will often link to your content as a reference. Even an in-depth ultimate guide can serve as its own hook. Bloggers love linking to comprehensive resources because it adds value for their readers.

Goal: Include a compelling reason for others to link to your content naturally.

Step 6: Optimize for On-Page SEO

Now that your content is published, it’s time to optimize it for SEO. Here are three crucial on-page SEO techniques to use:

  • ✅ Short, Keyword-Rich URLs: Keep your URLs short and clean. Use your main keyword or a variation.

Short URLs are easier to remember and typically perform better in search.

    To find them:
